For one year now my younger brother has been connecting Hiroshima and Ehime through his research on fish from a remote island near the Shimanami expressway.

The locals call the place the “Kani Kousen” *for some reason, and he’s been gritting his working there.

Yesterday I received a small package from my brother.

As soon as I removed the tape live shrimp were scattered all around the hallway of my house.

Good Dashi can be made from the head of the Shrimp!

With my brother’s advice in mind I threw the heads in saucepan.

I watched the pot swirl, it vividly changing colours before my eye, the shrimp still gasping for life, and prayed “Please die quickly”

* Kani Kōsen (蟹工船, "The Factory Ship") is a 1929 novel by Japanese author Takiji Kobayashi. The book expresses pessimistic tones from beginning to end, describing the harbour of Hakodate as being filled with rubbish, and the smaller boats being compared to insects.
